Magical papyrus – Budapest

Provenance unknown
18th Dynasty (14-13th BC)

The texts of the fragmentary papyrus are written in Hieratic and contain magic spells against headache (cause by either injury or migraine) and other maladies, which – according to ancient Egyptian beliefs – were inflicted by malevolent and restless dead spirits or ghosts coming from the depths of tombs or the netherworld. The texts combine several methods and practices in order to avert the danger: threats to be recited to ward off evil; receips of well proven treatments of the disease in question; the identification with the child god Horus who was successfully cured from the disease serves to guarantee a similar miraculous recovery of the patient.
